Network administrators can use this information to make sure that Mac computers and other Apple devices can connect to services such as the App Store and Apple's software-update servers.
There are, however, a few reasons you might want access to the file system on your device. SSH allows you to do just that using a Wi-Fi connection and a suitable Mac or PC client. SFTP Server allows you to share / exchange files via the SSH File Transfer Protocol (also Secure File Transfer Protocol, or SFTP). Note: ports below 1024 are not supported due to sandboxing. Features. Secure file transfer. Built-in SFTP accounts (independent of the macOS accounts). Per-use. Fetch is a reliable, full-featured file transfer client for the Apple Macintosh whose user interface emphasizes simplicity and ease of use. Fetch supports FTP and SFTP, the most popular file transfer protocols on the Internet Learn More. Fetch is a reliable, full-featured, easy-to-use file transfer client for the Macintosh Learn More. I'm looking for an SSH client that includes drag and drop file transfer functionality. I'm aware of CyberDuck, but it's a bit pricey. I found one or two other programs, and they're not free. I need it for my computer science class this semester. (I'm technically ok using the Terminal, but some of my Mac using classmates are not.).
Ports used by Apple products
This is a quick-reference guide showing common examples, not a comprehensive list of ports. This guide is updated periodically with information available at the time of publication.
Some software might use different ports and services, so it can be helpful to use port-watching software when deciding how to set up firewalls or similar access-control schemes.
Some services might use more than one of these ports. For example, a VPN service can use up to four different ports. When you find a product in this list, search (Command-F) in your browser for that name, then repeat your search (Command-G) to locate all occurrences of that product.

Some firewalls allow selective configuration of UDP or TCP ports with the same number, so it's important to know the type of port you're configuring. For example, NFS can use TCP 2049, UDP 2049 or both. If your firewall doesn't allow you to specify the type of port, configuring one type of port probably configures the other.

The application firewall in macOS is not a port-based firewall. It controls access by app, instead of by port.

Terminal User Guide
In Terminal, you can move and copy files locally or remotely using the
mv
, cp
, and scp
command-line tools.Tip: It’s easier to move and copy files using the Finder. See Organize files in folders.
Move a file or folder locally
- In the Terminal app on your Mac, use the
mv
command to move files or folders from one location to another on the same computer. Themv
command moves the file or folder from its old location and puts it in the new location. For example, to move a file from your Downloads folder to a Work folder in your Documents folder:% mv ~/Downloads/MyFile.txt ~/Documents/Work/MyFile.txt
You can also change the name of the file as it’s moved:% mv ~/Downloads/MyFile.txt ~/Documents/Work/NewFileName.txt
See the mv command man page.
Ssh File Transfer Mac Apps
Copy a file or folder locally
- In the Terminal app on your Mac, use the
cp
command to make a copy of a file. For example, to copy a folder named Expenses in your Documents folder to another volume named Data:% cp -R ~/Documents/Expenses /Volumes/Data/Expenses
The-R
flag causescp
to copy the folder and its contents. Note that the folder name does not end with a slash, which would change howcp
copies the folder.
See the cp command man page.
Copy a file or folder remotely
- In the Terminal app on your Mac, use the
scp
command to copy a file or folder to or from a remote computer.scp
uses the same underlying protocols asssh
.For example, to copy a compressed file from your home folder to another user’s home folder on a remote server:% scp -E ~/ImportantPapers.tgz [email protected]:/Users/username/Desktop/ImportantPapers.tgz
You’re prompted for the user’s password.The-E
flag preserves extended attributes, resource forks, and ACL information.The-r
flag, which isn’t used in this example, causesscp
to copy a folder and its contents.
See the scp command man page.
